CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Harlow’s brain seemed to be slamming against her skull, but she refused to give in to the pain. She had to keep up with this team. If she held them back from getting Vance, she’d never forgive herself. She let a breath out slowly. The helicopter ride to Grand Cayman had almost done her in. All that noise was agonizing. She had taken a couple of ibuprofen she had in her backpack, but she needed more. At least now they were on the way to some hotel. She could have a shower and maybe a nap.

She glanced at Cain in the driver’s seat of the SUV they’d rented. Not once had he asked her how she was doing. Hell, he hadn’t even glanced in her direction. He was ghosting her, and they weren’t even online. It wasn’t her fault she stood up. Nick and the others had already gotten to their feet, so it seemed okay. Admittedly, he’d told her to do exactly as he said, and she hadn’t waited, but how was she to know the damn container would blow up?

“You okay?”

She opened her eyes to find Nick staring at her. He was sitting beside her in the second row. “Um, just a bit of a headache.”

“That might last a while. Are you sure you want to continue with us? I can have some guardsmen take you back to your parents.”

He spoke in a quiet voice, which she greatly appreciated. She whispered back, “But then I can’t help you, and now that you’re down to one container, you need all the help you can get.”

Nick acknowledged her words with a nod. “But it’s not worth your life. Do you understand that? There is nothing that’s happening here that is worth losing a life over. We don’t get Vance today, there’s always tomorrow. We’ll get there. It’s truly not worth dying over.”

She nodded. “I know, but I have to do this.”

“Okay, but if you change your mind, let me know.”

They pulled up to the hotel, and Cain went in to get them all checked in. The rest of them waited for Cain to come out with the room keys.

“Where do we start looking for Vance?” she asked Nick as she leaned against the SUV.

“Damn good question. Once we get in and get settled, we’re gonna have to form a game plan.”

“If I can offer a suggestion…” she said as the others gathered around her. “If we don’t know where Vance and his people are, then we should start with what we do know.”

“Which is?” Elias asked.

“The bank where they’re going to deposit the money.” Cain’s voice came from behind the group.

She nodded and then regretted it. Less nodding was better with her aching head. “He’s right. We have to find the bank and then the banker. There’s gotta be someone we can ask who would know which banker is crooked.”

Nick cocked his head. “I like the way you’re thinking.” He paused for a minute. “I might be able to make a call.
